EN NAVALSHORE SE DISCUTEN NUEVAS POSIBILIDADES PARA LA CONSTRUCCION DE LA INDUSTRIA NAVAL BRASILERA

How to boost participation of companies increasing domestic production to standards of international competitiveness? This is the question that intertwined the discussions on the second day of Navalshore 2011 – Exhibition and Conference of Shipbuilding and Offshore Industry, which ends on this Friday, the 6th, at Centro de Exposições Sul América, in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.

The coordinator of Marine Technology at Transpetro, the engineer Ana Paula dos Santos Costa, said during the lecture “Overcoming the challenges of re-building ships in Brazil”, within the programming of Navalshore Conference, that the current rate of domestic volume of equipment and resources used in the Brazilian shipbuilding industry reaches 40% (figure that does not include manpower). “It's a positive result, but it could be better. Transpetro has been asking the shipyards to prioritize local resources”, she said.

However, Ana Paula pointed out that Brazil has advanced considerably: “The resumption of our shipbuilding industry was back in 2000, now we already reached the mark of 40% of market share. Japan took 100 years to reach 100% and China, which has yet an important history in the industry, has 53%. “The Transpetro engineer believes the national production chain will grow even more when there is a greater decrease in costs and stability on exchange rate.

Transpetro’s optimism goes along with Abimaq’s (Brazilian Association of Machinery and Equipment Industry). César Prata, President of the Shipping Equipment Chamber at the institution, believes the sea support vessels will be the major market for Brazilian ship equipment industry: “After the new business plan announced by Petrobras, we may consider the construction of 500 ships like this in the coming years”.
